3. The role of the HR professional

Should HR not be more visible steering the organisation to success by getting the most out of the workforce?

Arguably if people in the organisation are essential to its future success, HR professionals should be taking a key leadership role in helping to set the strategic direction of their organisations - many might view this as an absurd thought

To help understand the reason why this may be so, you need look no further than at someone who is always on the Board - the Finance Director. Whether you love them or hate them, it is generally recognised in today's world that interpretation of numbers and measurement gives you the knowledge and power to support a fairly reliable decision making process. Usefully presented they make a significant contribution to understanding the health of an organisation and the direction it should go in.

Now mention numbers to the average HR professional and more often than not you are met with a glazed expression - hard numbers are for accountants; they do not apply when you are dealing with people!
